Summary

Overall, La Jolla Cove Beach gets a score of 5.6/10. It is a nice place to visit if you're looking to take in the stunning coastline, be close to multiple amenities, relax, or enjoy some calmer water activities. The overall rating was brought down by the limited free parking available, and average ratings in multiple categories. However, the beach is located very centrally in La Jolla and on a calm, clear day it is truly a beautiful place to visit and enjoy the scenery.

Notable Mention

Please note that there are many  different factors coming into play as the ocean conditions can greatly affect the experience here and the activities that will be feasible. Overall, La Jolla Cove is a pleasant area to take in beautiful views of the ocean and coastline.

Parking

The parking at La Jolla Cove can be extremely difficult, and at peak times it just comes to a matter of luck. There is very limited street parking nearby. It's a busy area, so there are always people looking for parking as well. This makes it even more difficult to get a spot when you do see people leaving.

In order to secure a spot, the best chances would be to try for street parking a couple streets back from the ocean in La Jolla Village. If you're not able to find free street parking available, then there are multiple paid lots right next to La Jolla Cove and throughout La Jolla Village where you'd be able to get a spot.

Going to La Jolla Cove in the morning, especially on weekdays,  will make it easier to find parking. Additionally, on weekdays throughout most of spring, fall, and winter, it shouldn't be too hard to find free street parking near La Jolla Cove or in La Jolla Village.

Rating = 2/10 - Due to it being a very busy, crowded area, finding free parking here can be extremely difficult.

Crowds

The stretch of beach at La Jolla Cove is quite small, and during high tides or big swells, there can be little to no beach space available.

A lot of people will walk onto the beach here to check it out, which can make it seem crowded at times, but it's typically not difficult to find a free spot in the sand to hang out at.

Rating = 5/10 - There isn't typically an underwhelming or overwhelming amount of people on the beach here, giving it an average rating.

Amenities

There are bathrooms available, picnic tables, benches, walking paths, and endless options for food and drinks all within a few steps from the beach area.

There's also multiple hotels close by, shops, café's, and more. You'll also find some rental shops for kayaks or snorkel equipment within a close distance as well.

Additionally, there is a very large grass area just steps from the beach, which can be a popular place for farmer's markets and for people to sit and admire the views of the coast.

Rating = 7/10 -Everything you could possibly need is within a short, easy, and walkable distance.

Safety

The beach is considered relatively safe, with lifeguards patrolling the area to ensure visitors' well-being. However, as with any natural environment, there are inherent risks, and visitors should exercise caution, especially in highly trafficked areas like the beach and ocean, and a lot of people coming and going from the area.

Additionally, there are a lot of seals in this area of La Jolla, and they will often be on the beach, rocks nearby, or in the water, so it's always important to be cautious and aware of any wildlife and not to interfere with them in their natural habitat.

***Please note that the ocean is unpredictable and there can be strong currents anywhere on the beach at any time. Be sure to take necessary precautions before getting in the water and always ask a lifeguard if it is safe if you are unsure.

Rating = 7/10 - This beach is typically patrolled and has a solid lifeguard presence throughout.

Beach Cleanliness

The beach is relatively clean and doesn't really stand out either way as being extremely clean or dirty.

The sand is your typical plush, white sand, and there typically isn't much litter on this beach.

Overall, there aren't typically any concerns about the cleanliness or quality of sand here.

Rating = 6/10 - The beach cleanliness is slightly above average and about what you'd expect for a small stretch of beach that is heavily trafficked.

Water Quality

The Water Quality at La Jolla Cove Beach is generally the same throughout. It is generally safe to swim in the water, meaning the levels of bacteria in the water do not exceed the recommended amount. The water is tested by the City of San Diego every six days and posted on this website: County of San Diego Beach Water Quality (sdbeachinfo.com). It never hurts to check the status before going to the beach to make sure it's safe.

It is important to note that after rain, it is recommended to wait at least 72 hours before getting back in the water due to increased contaminants and sewage going in the ocean, especially near storm drains, rivers, and lagoon outlets.

Rating = 7/10 - Typically clean, unless there is a storm.

Activities

La Jolla Cove doesn't necessarily stand out as a place beaming with activities available to be enjoyed. What's available to do will also heavily depend on the wave conditions, as sometimes the water can be flat making for good snorkeling, scuba diving, or swimming conditions, and other times there can be waves that allow for boogie boarding.

Additionally, you'll see people kayaking or going out on paddle boards in this area as well. This is not a beach to go to for surfing, or certain beach games like volleyball as there isn't enough space.

Rating = 5/10 - Activities receive an average rating as there's less available to do both in the water and on the beach compared to other beaches throughout the San Diego area, and the conditions greatly affect what is feasible, but there are still activities that can be enjoyed.

Transportation

La Jolla Cove

The best way to get around La Jolla Cove is by car, foot, or bike. See below for more information.

Disclosure: This section features several affiliate links, meaning we earn a small commission if you purchase through these links. However, not all links posted are affiliate links. Click here to learn more.

The best way to get around depends on what you plan to do, where you're staying, and the time of year. During busy times such as 4th of July, there is limited parking so using your car is probably the worst way to get around, especially at peak times.

If you are flying into the San Diego airport, I recommend renting a car so that you can explore other areas too. There are many rental car companies to choose from at the airport.

Walking or biking between your vacation rental or hotel to the beach and to restaurants is a great option if you can handle it. Especially if you're staying near La Jolla Cove, as everything you'd need is within easy walking distance, and that's definitely the easiest way to explore that area!

Overall, I believe it's best to have a car, as that gives you freedom to explore other areas without having to worry about public transport or lyfts/ubers. As long as you keep in mind where you are going and the parking situation, you should be fine. If exploring other areas nearby such as other parts of La Jolla, downtown, etc., you might have to pay to park if it is crowded.
